It sounds like the setup for a joke: What happens when two supermodels, a couple billionaires and a cleaning lady are marooned on a desert island? But as told by filmmaker Ruben Östlund, the punchline is his Palme d'Or-winning social satire Triangle of Sadness.
The movie, which premiered during this year's 75th Cannes Film Festival and won the festival's top prize, stars Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean as celebrity models who are invited aboard a luxury cruise. The wealth on display is enough to make you sick — which is exactly what the passengers do when the ship hits rough waters: They barf, they vomit, they hurl in glorious, disgorging fashion.
And when the super yacht sinks, the social hierarchy is turned on its head as the ultra-rich find themselves at the mercy of the crew to survive. Woody Harrelson co-stars as the ships' Marxist captain.
Triangle of Sadness is the first English-language film from Swedish writer-director Östlund, and his second to win the Palme d'Or, following 2017's the Square. "I had the idea of taking up the important themes of our time in a context that makes audiences want to watch the film," he said upon his win. "We bring the audience in to discuss important themes. The most important question is that of responsibility: how do we build a society together?"
