When you are a director as lauded as David O. Russell, you tend to have your choice of actors to cast in your latest passion project. For his new crime epic, Amsterdam, the eight-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker chose... all of them.
Amsterdam stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington as three longtime friends — a doctor, a nurse and an attorney — who find themselves accused of murder and end up altering the course of history as we know it. Bale won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Russell's The Fighter, among four total Oscar nominations, while Robbie is a two-time nominee.
And that's just the beginning of this movie's billing. The stacked ensemble also includes Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldaña, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon (a two-time Oscar nominee), Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek (a Best Actor winner for Bohemian Rhapsody), and Robert De Niro (a Best Supporting Actor winner for The Godfather Part II and Best Actor winner for Raging Bull).
Russell wrote and directs, marking his first feature since 2015's Joy. The filmmaker himself was previously Oscar-nominated for Best Director for The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, earning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay for the latter two films, respectively.
Amsterdam opens in theaters on Nov. 4. Watch the trailer below.
