The summer movie season may be coming to an end, but fall arrives with plenty of promise: Just look at September's slate, which begins with the release of a new movie starring two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington and concludes with a movie toplined his son, BlacKkKlansman and Tenet star John David Washington. If we're exiting the summer of Barbenheimer — despite Barbie and Oppenheimer continuing to dominate the box office — then perhaps this month can be dubbed The Crequalizer. Or not! Either way, September offers up action flicks, biopics, and the year's most NSFW musical, providing plenty of ways to spend your nights (or early afternoons, if you're a matinee-goer) at the theater.

The Equalizer 3

Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua are bringing Robert McCall back for "the final chapter" in The Equalizer saga. Arriving nearly a decade after 2014's The Equalizer, the threequel finds Washington's former government assassin living the quiet life in the South of Italy — until the Italian mafia forces him out of retirement. Notably, The Equalizer 3 marks the Oscar-winning actor's first on-screen reunion with Dakota Fanning following 2004's Man on Fire.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Another threequel arriving this month, the newest My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie follows the Portokalos family — including Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, and Andrea Martin as the iconic Aunt Voula — to Greece to honor the last wish of dearly-departed patriarch Gus (the late Michael Constantine). Arriving 21 years after the Oscar-nominated original, the feel-good comedy marks a series first for scribe and star Vardalos: For My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, she's also the director.

A Haunting in Venice

The third (and final) threequel arriving this September is the latest Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery from director and star Kenneth Branagh. A follow-up to 2017's Murder on the Orient Express and 2022's Death on the Nile, A Haunting in Venice follows detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) as he sets out to solve a murder at a seance. Based on Christie's 1969 novel, Hallowe'en Party, the film also stars Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, and newly-minted Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh.

Cassandro

Based on the life of gay luchador Saúl Armendáriz (played by Gael García Bernal), the biopic follows the so-called Liberace of Lucha Libre from underdog to international superstar. Cassandro also stars Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, Raúl Castillo, and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — better known as Bad Bunny — and marks the narrative film debut of director Roger Ross Williams, who made history as the first Black filmmaker to win an Oscar.

Flora and Son

An audience favorite out of this year's Sundance Film Festival, Flora and Son is the latest musical dramedy from Once and Sing Street writer-director John Carney. The film centers on Dublin single mother Flora (Eve Hewson), who attempts to foster a love of music in her rebellious teenage son, Max (newcomer Orén Kinlan). But when Max rejects the guitar she gifts him, Flora vows to learn to play it herself, and unwittingly strikes up a relationship with a L.A.-based music teacher (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

Dumb Money

Recent years have seen Craig Gillespie go from directing the Oscar-winning biopic I, Tonya to the Oscar-winning Disney prequel Cruella, and now he's taking on the true story of the regular guy investor who bet on GameStop and turned Wall Street on its head. The ensemble dramedy, which will premiere during this month's Toronto International Film Festival, stars Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley and Seth Rogen.

It Lives Inside

Heading into spooky season, September is actually lighter on horror titles than recent months, but there are still fresh scares to be had. The feature debut of director Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside centers on Sam (Megan Suri), an Indian-American teenager who inadvertently releases a demonic entity known as a Pishach, which only grows stronger the more she rejects her heritage. The movie was produced by Oscar nominees Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick, who also served as producers on 2017's Get Out.

The Creator

Director Gareth Edwards' first film since 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story keeps him in the sci-fi sandbox, albeit this time, for an original blockbuster. Living in a future that has been torn apart by war between humans and artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington) is ordered to destroy a new weapon that has the potential to destroy mankind once and for all. His mission is complicated, however, when he discovers that his target is an android in the form of a young child. The Creator co-stars Gemma Chan, Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe, and Oscar winner Allison Janney.

Dicks: The Musical

A24's first movie musical is a spin on The Parent Trap starring Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion. Based on Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson's stage show F**king Identical Twins and helmed by Borat director Larry Charles, Dicks: The Musical follows self-obsessed businessmen (played by Sharp and Jackson) who discover they are long-lost identical twins, and hatch a scheme to get their parents back together. The film co-stars Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God, and will open this year's TIFF Midnight Madness.

Saw X

The milestone 10th entry in the Saw franchise is hailed as the "most disturbing installment yet." Arriving two years after the Chris Rock-led spin-off, Spiral, Saw X promises to turn its focus back to the Jigsaw killer. Set between the events of 2004's Saw and 2005's Saw II, the Kevin Greutert-directed horror film sees Jigsaw, aka John Kramer (franchise mainstay Tobin Bell), exacting revenge on the con artists behind a miraculous medical procedure. So, Saw X is both a sequel and a prequel and Jigsaw's most personal film yet.
