No one mourns a new Wicked trailer. The latest look at director Jon M. Chu's big-screen adaptation of the beloved musical sees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande defying gravity — or "Defying Gravity," as it were — as the green-hued Elphaba and her popular other half, Glinda.

Wicked takes place long before Dorothy arrives in the Land of Oz, and before Elphaba and Glinda become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, respectively. The odd couple meet as students at Shiz University, but an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (played by Oscar nominee Jeff Goldblum) threatens their friendship — and the future of Oz.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh co-stars as Shiz headmistress Madame Morrible and Jonathan Bailey as Elphaba's love interest Fiyero, with Peter Dinklage lending his voice to the talking goat, Dr. Dillamond. The cast also includes Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Pfannee and ShenShen, and Keala Settle as a new character created for the film called Miss Coddle.

Winnie Holzman, who wrote the musical's book based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, wrote the screenplay, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. (Maguire's book was, of course, based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel and the Oscar-winning 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.) The film was produced by three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt and David Stone.

Ahead of the trailer, Universal Picture released an emotional behind-the-scenes featurette, in which Chu, Erivo and Grande reflect on their relationship to the Broadway show and reveal their hopes for the movie: "I want people to see Wicked and experience it in a way that they've never experienced it before," says Chu. "I want them to feel what I felt going into that theater for the first time. I want to make them laugh, to make them sing, to make them feel that, after they've watched it, they've been changed for good."

Wicked flies into theaters on Nov. 27, with Wicked Part Two scheduled to arrive on Nov. 26, 2025.
