It has been seven years since George Miller's last film, Mad Max: Fury Road, was released. The seismic blockbuster was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, ultimately winning six Oscars, including Best Editing. The next film Miller is going to direct will be Furiosa, a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, which will feature Anya Taylor-Joy in the role played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Between the two films, Miller has directed Three Thousand Years of Longing, a project the visionary director first dreamed of making more than two decades ago. Based on A.S. Byatt's 1994 short story, The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye, and adapted by Miller and his daughter, Augusta Gore, Three Thousand Years of Longing is a romantic fantasy featuring magic, mystery and a pointy eared Idris Elba.
Tilda Swinton plays Dr. Alithea Binnie, a narratologist (one who studies stories and mythology) in Istanbul for an academic conference. There, she happens upon Elba's Djinn, who offers to grant her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Naturally, Alithea doesn't believe that magic is real, so Djinn begins to tell her stories of his three thousand years in and out of the bottle to prove himself.

MGM Pictures will release Three Thousand Years of Longing in theaters on Aug. 31.
