Following a teaser trailer for Disney's live-action Pinocchio that spotlighted every character except, well, Pinocchio, the newest trailer finally brings the boy to life.
This trailer reveals what happens after Tom Hanks' Geppetto makes a wish upon a star, and Cynthia Erivo's Blue Fairy (who actually performs "When You Wish Upon a Star" in the remake) transforms the wooden puppet into a real boy — or an "almost real boy," as Geppetto clarifies.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, meanwhile, lends his voice to Jiminy Cricket, who spends the trailer fretting over the trouble Pinocchio will get into — which comes in the form of "Honest" John Worthington Foulfellow (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), Luke Evans as The Coachman and Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, not to mention Monstro the gigantic, man-eating blue whale. This Pinocchio is, of course, a remake of the 1940 Disney animated classic, which itself was based on Carlo Collodi's 1883 Italian book, The Adventures of Pinocchio. Not to be confused with Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio — which is also coming to streamers this year — Disney's retelling hails from Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) from a screenplay he wrote with Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (About a Boy).
The 1940 Pinocchio took home two Oscars, winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song (for "When You Wish Upon a Star"). Alan Silvestri assumes composing duties for the 2022 Pinocchio, with new original songs courtesy of Silvestri and Glen Ballard.
Pinocchio is streaming exclusively on Disney+ on Sept. 8.
