We may be spending a lot more time indoors these days, but there are plenty of new (and not so new) movies to get us by. This week’s releases include A24’s Boy State, a Russian sci-fi thriller inspired by Alien, and more. Check them all out below.

“Some people say they’re a sports junkie, I say I’m a politics junkie.” In the latest documentary from A24, directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss bring viewers along on an annual, week-long program where 1,000+ high-school boys gather to build a mock representative government. Winner of the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Boys State starts streaming on Apple TV+ August 14.

This new animated movie by Cory Edwards follows a teen whose video game comes to life when three superpowered babies show up in his backyard. Featuring the voices of Yara Shahidi, Miles Robbins, and Gabrielle Union, Fearless (so named after the teen’s username) begins streaming on Netflix August 14.

Where to watch

Photographer Bert Stern’s documentary transports us to the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. It’s one of the earliest music docs and features by Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, and Dinah Washington—punctuated by scenes of the Newport harbor. It’s the perfect summer escape and, as of August 12, it’s available to stream through Kino Marquee.

In “Catfish” directing duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s new sci-fi thriller, a mysterious pill grants its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes. A teen (played by Dominique Fishback), a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and an ex-soldier (Jamie Foxx) team up to stop the spread of the drug and take down its creators. Project Power comes to Netflix on August 14.

In Egor Abramenko’s directorial debut, the sole survivor of a mysterious spaceship accident is unable to remember what happened to him. What we do know is that he has a slimy creature with sharp teeth living inside him—and it makes appearances at night. Distributed by IFC Midnight, Sputnik is available in theaters and on demand August 14.
