The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is launching its first ever celebration of newly preserved and restored films starting in December. The film series, called Present Past: A Celebration of Film Preservation, will feature 50 films from the Academy Film Archive and beyond, including studios, distributors, foundations, and independent filmmakers from around the world.

The films in the series include classics like The Masque of the Red Death with Vincent Price, It with flapper icon Clara Bow, and The Misfits, the final film of both Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, as well as silent films, shorts, documentaries, and more.

Each film in the series is celebrating its Los Angeles, North American, or world premiere restoration, a wonderful opportunity for audiences to see these works as they were meant to be seen. In addition to the screenings, some filmmakers, archivists, and preservationists will be on hand to discuss their work.

Special guests making appearances at the screenings include Cauleen Smith, Mirra Bank, Lizzie Borden, Melina McDowell, Jon Boorstin, Frank Gehry, Pamela Weir-Quinton, T-Kay Sangwand, Greta Snider, Joe Dante, Jon Davison, Mindy Johnson, Danny Huston, Christine Choy, and Renee Tajima-Peña.

And for some of the silent classics, there will be live musical accompaniment, helping further recreate the atmosphere of the original screenings.

The Academy Film Archive was established in 1991, and is home to one of the most diverse and extensive film collections in the world. It is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, documentation, and study of motion pictures, as well as exhibition. The collection has over 230,000 items and is continuing to grow and evolve to allow for new materials in need of preservation. The Archive team's work helps save films from deterioration, revitalizing works that were once considered, lost, damaged, or unprojectable.

Present Past: A Celebration of Film Preservation runs from Dec. 1 until Dec. 19 at the Academy Museum, and is also part of the December Oscar Sunday Series. Tickets and more information are available here.
