According to Toy Story lore, Buzz Lightyear (the action figure voiced by Tim Allen) is a toy modeled after a character in a science fiction movie. Now, Pixar is releasing that movie — Lightyear — with Chris Evans voicing that Buzz Lightyear.

"In Toy Story, there seemed to be this incredible backstory to [Buzz] being a Space Ranger that's only touched upon, and I always wanted to explore that world further," explains director Angus MacLane. "So my Lightyear pitch was, 'What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?' I wanted to see that movie."

The official trailer for Lightyear reveals the "real" Buzz on a mission to infinity and, we're going to go ahead and guess, beyond. Marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth, Buzz must contend with aliens, robots — yep, that's Zurg (as voiced by James Brolin) — and a cute robot cat called Sox (voiced by Disney and Pixar regular Peter Sohn).

Lightyear's voice cast also includes Uzo Aduba as Buzz's commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne, Keke Palmer as her granddaughter Izzy Hawthorne, and Taika Waititi and Dale Soules as Junior Zap Patrollers Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively.
