Some movies appeal to our ears. Some cater to our hearts. But each year, the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects gives us a taste of films that will wow your eyeballs.

Shortlist: Academy Award for Best Visual Effects

Each year, the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Committee determines which films are on the shortlist—and the entire branch considers these films when voting on Oscars nominations. In the annual VFX Bakeoff—which was held virtually this year—VFX artists representing the shortlisted films presented a 10-minute reel to showcase the film’s visual effects and how they made it all happen. What a treat those must be to watch.

Last year, Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler, and Dominic Tuohy were given the honor for Best Visual Effects for their amazing work in 1917. Here are the 10 films that hope to be the next winner.
