Martin Scorsese directed Leonardo DiCaprio to Oscar nominations in The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street, while Robert De Niro received nominations for the Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Cape Fear and Raging Bull. (De Niro won the Best Actor Oscar for the latter.) Yet, the three frequent collaborators had never all worked on a film together until Killers of the Flower Moon.
Based on David Grann's 2017 bestseller Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the Western crime saga revolves around a series of brutal murders of members of Osage Nation, an Oklahoma tribe who had found great fortune through oil. Set in the 1920s, the story is told through the marriage of Osage native Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone) and Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) — the nephew of a powerful local rancher, William Hale (De Niro), willing to resort to murder to steal that wealth for himself. Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons co-stars as FBI agent Tom White.
Scorsese (himself an Oscar winner for directing 2006's The Departed, among 14 total nominations) directs from a screenplay he adapted with Oscar winner Eric Roth. The film will have its world premiere out of competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Killers of the Flower Moon will premiere in select theaters on Oct. 6 before expanding on Oct. 20 and then streaming globally on Apple TV+. Watch the trailer below.
