It’s a holiday week—but one with plenty of new content to keep us cozy and entertained. Scroll to see what’s in store.
Week of December 21, 2020
Pixar’s latest film, Soul, explores the age-old question: What is life really about? As Oscar winner Pete Docter recalls thinking, “Perfect subject for a kids cartoon. That’s what we’re looking for when we’re doing animated films. We’re trying to find something that we know is going to have a veneer of fun and things that kids will love, but at the heart of it, you want it to wrestle with something that’s really deep and meaningful to you as a filmmaker—to me.” The film, directed by Docter and co-directed/written by Kemp Powers, is available on Disney+ beginning Dec. 25.
Wonder Woman 1984
Patty Jenkins is back in the director’s chair with Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, who comes into her full powers in the 1980s, ultimately facing off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah. The movie is available in theaters and on HBO Max starting December 25.
Starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, Sylvie’s Love is set in the late 1950s to early ’60s. The titular character (played by Thompson) lives in Harlem and works in her father’s record store, where she falls for a saxophonist named Robert (Asomugha). Sparks fly, and we watch as their relationship evolves over the years. This Eugene Ashe-directed romantic melodrama is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
One Night in Miami
Oscar winner Regina King makes her directorial debut with One Night in Miami, based on Kemp Powers’ (yes, also co-director and writer of Soul) 2013 stage play. It follows the meeting of four Black legends—a young boxer named Cassius Clay, Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and NFL star Jim Brown—on the night of Feb. 25, 1964. Watch the film in select theaters Dec. 25 or on Amazon Prime Video Jan. 15.
Promising Young Woman
This black comedy thriller film marks director, writer and producer Emerald Fennell’s feature directorial debut. Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie, a barista who lives a secret double life reaping revenge on toxic men. Over the course of the film, we find out why. Promising Young Woman is in select theaters Dec. 25 and is expected to go to VOD in early January.
