More than 30 years after 1986's Top Gun, Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is taking on a new class of hot shots in Top Gun: Maverick. But if this new trailer is any indication, he will also be facing ghosts from the past.

Val Kilmer's Tom "Iceman" Kazansky is who brings Maverick back into the mix, his one-time rival now serving as the Commander of the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet. As Maverick is told in the trailer, "You are here at the request of Admiral Kazansky. He seems to think you have something left to offer the Navy — what that is, I can't imagine." (Kilmer will reprise his role in the movie.)

Maverick will also square off with the son of his late best friend, "Goose" Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards in 1986's Top Gun). "My dad believed in you. I'm not going to make the same mistake," Miles Teller's pilot trainee Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw warns Maverick.

The new class of Top Gun graduates also includes Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis and Manny Jacinto. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris join the franchise as well.

The long-awaited sequel was directed by Joseph Kosinski, and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie.

Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated to hit theaters back in the summer of 2019, before being rescheduled to 2020, and then — due to the COVID-19 pandemic — was postponed four additional times. Now, the film is finally set to swoop into theaters on May 27.
