In 1985, Steven Spielberg adapted Alice Walker's masterpiece of a novel, The Color Purple, for the big screen. Twenty years after that, the book and the movie inspired a Broadway musical, which was then revived in 2015. Now, a new adaptation of The Color Purple arrives as a movie musical.

Fantasia Barrino, in her film debut, stars as Celie, and the movie's trailer previews her rendition of the showstopper "I'm Here." Newcomer Phylicia Pearl Mpasi plays young Celie, with Halle Bailey as Nettie. The cast also includes Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, and H.E.R. as Squeak, as well as Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr.

This "bold new take" on The Color Purple hails from director Blitz Bazawule (Beyoncé's Black Is King) from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley (adapting both Walker's novel and the musical's book by Marsha Norman). Like the stage show, the music and lyrics are by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, with a score by Oscar winner Kris Bowers.

The Color Purple arrives nearly 40 years after Spielberg's non-musical adaptation. That film earned 11 nominations at the 58th Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Oprah Winfrey. (Both Spielberg and Winfrey serve as producers on this new iteration.)

The Color Purple opens in theaters on Dec. 25. Watch the trailer below.
