My Big Fat Greek Wedding opened in theaters on April 19, 2002, introducing the world to the Portokalos family and their 30-year-old unmarried waitress daughter. But when nice Greek girl Toula (Nia Vardalos) falls for the WASPy and decidedly non-Greek Ian Miller (John Corbett), it's a culture class of Olympian proportions.

If the Portokalos have anything to say about it, Toula and Ian will only make it to the alter if he can appease the Greeks: Toula's mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) and Windex devotee father Gus (Michael Constantine), her brother Nick (Louis Mandylor), Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) and her lump of a twin sister, uncle Taki (Gerry Mendicino) and cousins Nikki (Gia Carides) and Angelo (Joey Fatone).

Considering the phenomenon that My Big Fat Greek Wedding became — it is the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time and spawned both a short-lived TV series, My Big Fat Greek Life, and a 2016 sequel — it's funny to remember the movie began as Vardalos' one-woman show based on her own family and was released as a little indie rom-com. (Rita Wilson saw the stage show and convinced husband Tom Hanks to produce it with her.)

At the 75th Academy Awards in 2003, Vardalos earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, with My Big Fat Greek Wedding recognized alongside Far From Heaven, Gangs of New York, Talk to Her and Y tu mamá también. (Pedro Almodóvar ultimately took home the Oscar for Talk to Her.)
