Since its opening last August, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures exhibition Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 has been celebrating over 70 years of Black excellence in film. Now, to continue and expand on the exhibition's work, the Museum is kicking off Black History Month with a weekend-long festival, the "Regeneration Summit: A Celebration of Black Cinema."

From Feb. 3-5, the Museum will host a series of events including live entertainment, workshops, screenings, talks, and immersive experiences for audiences of all ages to further engage with the history of Black cinema. Additionally, some of the biggest names in Black filmmaking, history, and preservation will be in attendance, including Julie Dash, the Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, Janaya Future Khan, Mario Van Peebles, Shola Lynch, and Justice Maya Singleton, son of Oscar-nominee John Singleton.

The festivities begin with the "Around the Block Party" on Friday, Feb. 3. The party will feature multiple events, including a workshop from the Black Girl Film School, a panel from the Academy's Black Caucus titled "What Does Black Cinema Mean To You?" and an evening closing event honoring Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, featuring appearances from Calloway’s grandson and Fayard Nicholas' granddaughters for a historic live performance.

Saturday, Feb. 4, is Symposium Day, with book signing and meet-and-greet opportunities, and panels on some of the hidden history of Black representation in genres like musicals and the Western.

The festival closes out Sunday, Feb. 5, with the Free Family Fun Day, including horse riding lessons, storytime, and a guide on teaching Black cinema for generations to come.

All three days will feature a mini food market featuring all Black women–owned pop-up food vendors powered by Black Women Vend, multiple live DJ sets and performances, photo opportunities, hands-on activities in the Regeneration Maker Lounge, and the Regeneration Discovery Challenge, where upon completion of each prompt, you can enter for a chance to win a free one-year membership to the Academy Museum.

The Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 exhibition continues through July of this year.
