It's been four years since Black Panther debuted to rave reviews, broke records at the box office, and eventually became the first superhero movie to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. (The movie ultimately won three Oscars.) Four years is a long time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's nearly time to return to Wakanda.

A Black Panther sequel, titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is on the way, albeit without the titular superhero: Chadwick Boseman, who died unexpectedly in 2020. Following news of his death, Marvel Studios announced that the role of T'Challa would not be recast, nor would he appear via CGI.

"Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally. His portrayal of T'Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel's past," Kevin Feige said at the time. "It's for that reason that we will not recast the character."

Ahead of the movie's release, here's everything there is to know about the Black Panther sequel.

What is 'Wakanda Forever' about?

Here is the movie's official synopsis:

Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli.

When does the movie come out?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on Nov. 11.

Who's starring in 'Wakanda Forever'?

Letitia Wright as Shuri: T'Challa's younger sister and a Wakandan tech wiz, who was put in charge of running Wakanda's Oakland-based outreach center at the end of the first film. In the comics, Shuri has at times adopted the mantle of Black Panther herself.

Danai Gurira as Okoye: Head of the Dora Milaje and a fierce defender of T'Challa and the Wakandan royal family. Okoye's last MCU appearance in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, as part of The Battle of Earth.

Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia: A War Dog secret agent and love interest to T'Challa, Nakia was influential in convincing the late king to open the borders of Wakanda to the wider world.

Angela Bassett as Ramonda: The Queen Mother of Wakanda and mother to T'Challa and Shuri, Ramonda must now contend with the death of her husband, T'Chaka (John Kani), and firstborn son.

Winston Duke as M'Baku: As the leader of the leader of the Jabari mountain tribe, M'Baku was a former enemy-turned-ally, fighting alongside T'Challa in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross: The CIA agent made his debut in Captain America: Civil War before returning in Black Panther. Following Wakanda Forever, he will next appear in Disney+'s Secret Invasion.

Florence Kasumba will also return as Ayo, alongside Isaach de Bankolé, Dorothy Steel, and Danny Sapani as Wakanda elders. Notably absent is Daniel Kaluuya, who will not reprise his role as W'Kabi due to scheduling conflicts with filming Nope.

Which new characters will be introduced?

Dominique Thorne, who made her screen debut in If Beale Street Could Talk and appeared in Judas and the Black Messiah, will play Riri Williams, aka the superhero Ironheart. Thorne will make her MCU debut in Wakanda Forever before starring in her own Disney+ series.

Michaela Coel also joins the franchise as Dora Milaje warrior Aneka, while Tenoch Huerta (The Forever Purge) will play Namor the Sub-Mariner, a Marvel anti-hero from the kingdom of Atlantis.

Who's behind the scenes?

Ryan Coogler once again served as director and co-writer, reuniting with Joe Robert Cole to pen the screenplay. (Coogler is an Oscar nominee for producing Judas and the Black Messiah.)

Composer Ludwig Göransson will also return for Wakanda Forever, having won the Oscar in 2019 for Best Original Score, as will Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter, whose Oscar wins for Black Panther made history as they became the first Black women to win for Best Production Design and Costume Design, respectively.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who previously served as DP on Disney+'s Loki, will assume cinematography duties. (Rachel Morrison was unable to return due to pandemic-related scheduling conflicts.)
