Yes, it’s Halloween weekend—but it’s also the weekend before Election Day (Nov. 3). And some studios are making their timely titles available to viewers for free for a limited time.
Totally Under Control
Oscar winner Alex Gibney’s new documentary—put together over these last turbulent months—explores how the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded in the U.S. Along with co-directors Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger, Gibney worked fast, incorporating news and headlines as they broke, and coming out on the other side with a two-hour film that showcases institutional failings of the last 10 months. Shooting involved using a “Covid Cam,” a camera that allowed subjects to be interviewed and recorded safely—and a phrase we could only ever imagine in 2020.
NEON has made Totally Under Control available for free on their site through Nov. 4. Subscribers can also watch it on Hulu. And on Oct. 30 at 4pm PT/7pm ET, Gibney and Judd Apatow will host a watch party for the film on Twitter.
All In: The Fight for Democracy
Academy members Lisa Cortés and Liz Garbus take a look at the controversial 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race (then-candidate Stacey Abrams is also a producer on the film) and present it as the culmination of an unsettling, centuries-long history of voter suppression efforts in America. The doc is a warning, yes, but it’s also a resource: The filmmakers have partnered with a network of non-profits to create an online hub for voting info. Check it out now at allinforvoting.com.
Amazon Prime Video has made Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés’s available for free on YouTube until Nov. 1. Subscribers can also watch it on Prime Video.
