"Can I ask you a question? Are you two together?"

It's one of only a handful of lines of dialogue in the trailer for Lukas Dhont's coming-of-age drama, Close, but it changes everything for the movie's young protagonists. The film centers on 13-year-old best friends Léo (Eden Dambrine) and Rémi (Gustav de Waele) as their intense bond is picked apart by those around them, leading to a tragedy that changes both of their lives forever.

"We're close because we're best friends," Léo tells his teasing classmate.

"Are you sure?" she asks.

Close is the second film from Belgium director Dhont following 2018's Queer Palm-winning Girl and sees him reteaming with writer Angelo Tijssens on the script. The film premiered during this year's Cannes Film Festival, where it tied for the Grand Prix award. (The prize was jointly awarded with Claire Denis' Stars at Noon.)

"I'm very honored to win this prize with this film. It's a very important film for me," Dhont said at the time. "After Girl, I wanted to speak of the subject of a film with the same intensity. It talks about very personal things. I wanted to make these emotions universal. It's always a very fragile moment, sharing something with the public when you've put everything inside it. I tried to remain faithful to myself while trying to challenge myself to do even better. There's a great desire to make films. I hope that, in the future, my films will be just as warmly received."

Close will open in theaters in 2022. Watch the trailer below.
