The countdown is on...

Universal Pictures released the first teaser for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer in the form of a minute-by-minute countdown to the movie's release. The first footage focuses on Cillian Murphy's titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, as voiceover holds him up as "the most important man who ever lived."

The film marks Murphy's sixth collaboration with the five-time Oscar-nominated director, following The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, the film tells the story of the Manhattan Project and the invention of the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

Universal's official summary hails the film as an "epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it." Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. also star, in a cast that includes Rami Malek, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh and many more.

Oppenheimer drops on July 21, 2023 — the same day another highly-anticipated movie, Greta Gerwig's Barbie, opens in theaters. Watch the teaser announcement for Oppenheimer below.
