Get ready for a mind trip courtesy of Chris Hemsworth.
In Spiderhead, Marvel's god of thunder forgoes his usual big screen heroics to assume the role of brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti, who runs the eponymous state-of-the-art penitentiary and research center. "At Spiderhead, we're proud of our work. Your presence in this facility, while technically a punishment, is a privilege," he explains in the trailer.
Which is the sort of benevolent thing somebody in a movie says when they're actually doing something nefarious. In Abnesti's case, he is performing experiments on his prisoners using surgically-implanted devices that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences — all in order to make the world a better place, of course.
When two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form an unexpected connection, their path to redemption takes a twistier turn, as Abnesti's experiments start to push the limits of free will. Watch the trailer below.
Spiderhead is based on George Saunders' short story, "Escape From Spiderhead," first published in The New Yorker in 2010. Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the screenplay, with Joseph Kosinski at the helm. The director is in for one helluva summer, as he is also the man behind the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick.
Netflix will premiere Spiderhead on the streamer on June 17.
