Nearly a century after author Erich Maria Remarque's novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, was published in 1929 — with the movie adaptation winning the Oscar for Best Picture the following year — a new telling of the story of German soldiers on the frontlines of World War I is making its way to theaters.
Hailing from director Edward Berger — the first German filmmaker to tackle the source material — All Quiet on the Western Front follows Paul Bäumer (newcomer Felix Kammerer) as the initial high of soldier life gives way to the devastation of war. Daniel Brühl co-stars as Matthias Erzberger, a real-life diplomat and anti-war activist.
"This is neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure," begins the movie's trailer, a direct quote from Remarque. "For death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it."
The 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front earned four nominations at the 2nd Oscars and won two awards: Best Director for Lewis Milestone and Best Picture (known then as Outstanding Production), becoming the first Best Picture winner based on a novel. The movie would later be deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress' National Film Registry.
The novel was adapted again in 1979, this time as a television movie directed by Oscar winner Delbert Mann (Marty). That iteration earned seven Emmy nominations and won one for Outstanding Film Editing for a Limited Series or a Special.
This All Quiet on the Western Front will premiere during the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before streaming on Netflix on Oct. 28. Watch the trailer below.
